MZed Pro Review (2023) – Learn Filmmaking For Real!

MZed Pro Review

This is a review of MZed’s “MZed Pro” subscription available online.

  • Is MZed Pro worth it?
  • Is MZed Pro better than Full-Time Filmmaker?
  • Who should enroll in MZed Pro?

Mzed has joined the online education realm and niched to focus specifically on filmmakers.

With names like Philip Bloom & Seth Worley, I was very intrigued coming from a YouTube background. Though, as I dug deeper, I saw other very incredible names pop up like Tom Cross and Shane Hurlbut, to name a couple.

But, with so many online education options available online, does Mzed do enough to separate itself from the competition?

Mzed is Here To Help you Learn Filmmaking

MZed Pro gives you access to their entire library of filmmaking content for an extremely reasonable rate. Although I haven’t watched all of the courses (yet), I’ve been incredibly impressed with Philip Bloom’s courses, Seth Worley’s, and Tom Cross’s. As a platform, the site is easy to navigate, the mobile app is intuitive and easy to use, and they show no sign of slowing down on their content. If you have been interested in learning filmmaking from one of the great names on their list, then you won’t be disappointed.

With their money-back guarantee, there truly is no reason not to try and see if it’s a good fit for you.

Mzed has also put together a very nice webinar that shows you 5 Hollywood secrets you can use in your filmmaking. It’s free and a great taste of what you will get if you subscribe to their service.

Mzed has also been listed as my #1 pick for learning cinematography.

This review will focus mostly on the platform as a whole rather than a specific course offering. If you are looking for a review of a course that Mzed offers, you can take a look at my review of one of their most popular courses called the Cinematic Masterclass by Philip Bloom here.

MZed Pro: Verdict

Best Membership for Filmmakers

Mzed Pro is a great resource to learn filmmaking online from big names in the industry without the giant price tag. The subscription model gives you unlimited access to all their library without having to pay for each individual course. The site itself and app are easy to use and make learning on the platform seamless. There is something here for filmmakers of all levels.

Pros of MZed Pro

Wide range of talented instructors
Incredibly high production value
Ability to purchase individual courses or an entire membership
Easy to navigate and use website
Nice note-taking feature for when you are taking courses
Company seems to be cranking up their online efforts and will likely expand to more instructors at a faster rate
Constantly releasing new, fresh content

Cons for MZed Pro

No monthly subscription option

Now, let’s take a deeper look into Mzed Pro and see if it’s the right fit for you.

What is MZed Pro?

Mzed Pro is a subscription offered by Mzed that gives you access to their entire library of courses, giving you access to instructors like Philip Bloom, Seth Worley, the Arri Academy, as well as a number of courses from the Hurlbut Academy.

Mzed Pro allows you to pick and choose a particular subject (or instructor) and learn from them at your own pace with their high production value courses.

The main idea behind MZed Pro is to give you access to the industry’s top minds by having them teach the subject matter they are a master on.

Courses Offered by MZed Pro

MZed Pro’s library of content is constantly evolving so I encourage you to check out their website to get the most up to date library of what they have to offer.

Though, personally, some of my favorite courses (and ones that I have in my queue to learn from) are:

  • Philip Bloom’s Cinematic Masterclass
  • Philip Bloom’s Filmmaking for Photographers
  • Short Films 101 by Seth Worley
  • The Art & Technique of Film Editing with Tom Cross
  • Master the Moment by Ray Roman
  • Cinematography: Mastering the Image by Shane Hurlbut ASC
  • The Art of Visual Storytelling by Alex Buono
  • How to Photograph Everyone

MZed Learning Platform Review

Learning on the MZed platform is a joy and it enhances the experience rather than get in the way. Mzed does a number of things that make learning on the platform great.

When you watch a course, you are able to easily see what each of the sections is going to cover. They also offer a range of subtitles depending on the course and also offer captions as well. Additionally, if you would like to download the videos for offline viewing, you can do that too, which is a rare feature to see for any online platform which is typically restricted just to mobile apps.

The video player on MZed is also very unique, as it gives you a transcript for the whole video, a section to make your own notes, and a bookmarking feature. All of these combine to elevate the experience beyond what you may find in other popular course platforms.

Free Lessons Available on MZed

MZed offers a number of free lessons on their website if you do some clicking around. For example, both of Philip Bloom’s classes offer the very first video available for free, which give you a great taste of what taking the course will actually be like. You can check out these by clicking here and navigating to the courses page and clicking on the respective course you want to check out.

MZed VS Full Time Filmmaker and Other Filmmaking Options

If you had one choice to go with a filmmaking library like MZed Pro or go with an all-in-one online film school like Full Time Filmmaker, which one should you choose? The short answer, for me, is to go with what better aligns with your current goals and gets you excited to learn filmmaking.

  • If you are looking to go from zero filmmaking knowledge to making a living as a filmmaker, Full Time Filmmaker was created exactly for that purpose and would make better sense for you.
  • If you are looking to make short films, being a dedicated colorist, or being an onset DP, MZed Pro offers more courses that cater directly to those needs.

The good news is that both of them offer money-back guarantees so you can always sign up and see if they do indeed fit your needs and, if they don’t, get a refund. At the end of the day, both are top-tier learning solutions that satisfy different needs.

The Verdict for MZed Pro

Rating: 5 out of 5.

MZed Pro is a great solution for aspiring filmmakers or working filmmakers that want to learn specific skills like writing short films, lighting, directing, and more. In short, if you see one of the topics you want to learn listed in their course catalog, you will be well-served as you will be learning from a master in that industry. With their money-back guarantee, you can always give them a try to see if they are a good fit for your needs. MZed Pro comes highly recommended from me and is one of my favorite tools for learning filmmaking online.

MZed has also created an incredibly useful free webinar that shows you 5 Hollywood secrets you can use in your filmmaking. If you want to get a taste of what MZed can offer you, this is a great starting point. And it’s free!
